Frequently Asked Questions
How are freeze-dried candy, fruit and ice cream made?
All our products go through the same freeze-drying process using specialised equipment. First, the food is frozen to ultra-low temperatures (around -45°C). A vacuum is then applied while the temperature is slowly increased, allowing the moisture to escape through sublimation (water skips the liquid stage and goes straight from ice to vapour).
The result? A light, crunchy texture with big flavour, while keeping the original taste and nutritional value. Depending on the product, the process can take 5 to 30+ hours.
Do you add anything during the freeze-drying process?
Nope. Nothing added. No chemicals, no preservatives, no funny business.
Freeze-drying is simply a temperature- and pressure-controlled process that removes moisture — that’s it.
Does freeze-drying remove nutritional value?
Not at all. Freeze-drying is one of the best methods for preserving nutrition, flavour, and texture.
Because the food is frozen before moisture is removed, nutrients stay largely intact — you just get a lighter, crunchier version of the original. Bonus: freeze-dried candy often tastes even sweeter thanks to flavour concentration.
How do you calculate nutritional information for freeze-dried candy?
Because freeze-drying removes water (and therefore weight), nutritional values can’t be measured accurately by weight alone.
Instead, kilojoules and calories should be considered per piece, not per gram. Freeze-drying doesn’t change the calorie content — it just removes the water.
Example: around 20 pieces of candy ≈ 100 calories (420 kJ).
Do people eat less because it’s freeze-dried?
Usually, yes. Removing water intensifies flavour, so you feel satisfied sooner.
Hard candies like Minties, Red Ripperz and Brittle also transform into a soft, airy, meringue-like texture that melts in your mouth — easier on teeth and oddly addictive (you’ve been warned).
Do I need to drink water while eating freeze-dried foods?
Yes — and you should anyway. Freeze-dried foods contain little to no moisture, so they don’t contribute to hydration.
Enjoy them alongside a drink and you’re golden.
How long do freeze-dried products last?
When stored correctly, freeze-dried foods can last years.
Our products are packed in foil zip-lock bags and have a best-before date of 12 months from production. Once opened, reseal tightly and store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
For peak crunch and flavour, we recommend enjoying within 2–3 months of opening.
Can all foods be freeze-dried?
Short answer: no.
Some foods freeze-dry beautifully, others… not so much. It’s a bit of trial and error. We focus on candies and desserts that deliver the best texture, flavour and overall experience.
What’s the difference between freeze-drying and dehydrating?
Both remove moisture, but they’re not even close in quality:
Dehydrating removes about 80–95% of water and changes texture and flavour.
Freeze-drying removes 98–99% of water while preserving structure, flavour and nutrition.
Freeze-drying machines are far more advanced (and expensive) — and the results speak for themselves.
